Cost Effective Ways to Update your Fireplace

White Washed Brick – Fireplace design

FIREPLACES are the Focal Point of every room they stand in. A well designed Fireplace can add value to a home and make a beautiful design statement. Most times they are right in the center of the room.

Yet, people are unaware of the options so they often avoid updating the most important design element in the room.

Understandably brick, stone and wood and other materials can be intimidating, and even costly to change.

But there are cost effective ways to update a fireplace without major construction. Some of which even may be do-it-yourself projects.

White Washing: the brick that surrounds your fireplace. White washing is a finish that washes a white paint color over the brick to soften the red- orange color. This finish can be used with all design styles. Help yourself to the free blog on

How to White Wash Fireplace Brick Like a Professional

German Smear -Fireplace design

German Smear:  is a mortar finish that is applied a few different ways to create an aged and broken down look. City Loft style, Country, Rustic, Urban, Modern, Traditional.

Hand Painted Brick and Stone: Yes, it’s really a thing. I actually make a living at it. I know people have thier reservations about painting natural stone. But imagine if you could have it in the exact color and texture that would match your design style. Hand painting brick and stone can be applied in a way and in earth colors that makes the stone look very natural.

The Marvelous Mantel: It’s kind of a big deal. Usually made of Wood. Wood and stone are naturally amazing together and create a well balanced design. Your mantle should match the style of the fireplace. For example, if your fireplace is done in a German Smear finish, you may consider a reclaimed wood or railroad tie to match the rustic style. View this article on….“The Marvelous “Mantel” .

The Hearth: If the hearth is attached to the the rest of the fireplace with the same stone then it should be finished all to match.

If it has a gray cement hearth you can paint it to freshen it up. If it is a hearth that is flush with the floor and needs to be replaced I usually recommend a dark natural stone.

Glass door inserts and Screens: These are a personal choice. If you have children you may consider glass doors that close tight (tinted glass is a nice look). If not, they make different styles of decorative screens.
